Would "hackers" aka "server hacker GUI 100% works" users be able to harm my original machine if I'd host a cs 1.6 HLDS on a virtual machine then open ports in it? If not then the worst thing would be losing server files on that virtual machine but that would be no problem, have backup plans. Also would a HLDS even run efficiently or at least not too laggy with these specs?

Different virtualization systems will give some kind of "overhead" (lost performance) compared to running the stuff directly on the hardware.

Will you notice the difference? Most likely not.

However, you are wanting to add other virtual machines/containers that are doing some other tasks for you on the same physical machine, then it will of course depend on what these other machines/containers are doing.

And well, there seem to have been examples of Virtual machine escape, but seeing as you do have backup plans, you can easily re-install the virtualization system and restore your VM(s), if necessary.

If you are as worried as you sound to be though, then you should probably hesitate from doing anything online. ;-)

I don't think VME would be a problem since I'd have mostly 12yr olds playing on my server, also I wouldn't mention having the server hosted on a VM anywhere, of course.

As for performance, Having HLDS running on a VM and hl.exe, opinions? Setting proper priority for each in taskmngr?
