Hmmm, I'm not that great with engine, or entity based commands. So discluding the cstrike crap, what would be the best way to give a user a gun?

If they don't have the weapon to begin with, that second part won't help.

Heh yeah. I don't see any reason to do it the CS module way, when it's a lot less mess with the fun module way ^^ (assuming that you use both/neither)
