Seems L4D2 engine don't have console output log con_logfile file like other mods.
There is condump what dump the text currently in the console to log file and suprise, suprise, it's only client side command.

You can try find it typing your console input
find con

If it's just going to choose a random arbitrary port, it doesn't matter if your ports are one away or ten away.

It simple, something else using the current port you try to apply. If the servers are hosted on your computer then it will ignore the first port which is 27015. Then if an other server is running and you don't give him a specific port he will go automaticly to 27016 or if you give him the port 27015 he will also go automaticly to 27016. If you start your game after the spesific server above then the game running on 27015 and the server on 27016. It a simple port logic that valve use. Try to find out if you run multi server, be sure to set them to a specific port and those port are not used by any others program, other wise it will move all ports by +1.
