Other people can give you either + or - reputation at their discretion. It's the little green + and red - at the bottom of the author box in each post.

Generally people will approve or disapprove of a message you post. They may feel the need to give you an indication of that by either raising or lowering your reputation.

What you see in your profile is a link to the specific post that someone altered your reputation in. If the reputation giver/taker is a bit mature, they'll actually give you a reason as to why the affected your reputation as they did.

I wouldn't always expect that maturity. Recently someone's requested a link for a specific plugin he couldn't find. I stupidly searched and posted him the link to end that case; then he gave me -reputation. Reason?

plugin doesn't do what I wanted

I admit I deserved that.
