i got it to work with vbulletin once upon a time
havent used smf, but what id do is make a custom profile field that users can enter their steam id in, and make the steam id in the url a variable, insert it in the postbit, and retrieve the info from the profile field. (in vbulletin its as simple as goin g to the admin panel clicking add new profile field then instead of the steam id, you write $post['field5'])

Hmm, I'm getting a pretty generic error when trying to use the following steam ID STEAM_0:1:16651803.

Comes up with

some error occurred

Also, on a side note, I got it intergrated nicely with SMF by using the Custom Profile Fields Mod and using the code that was provided in the relevant before and after sections for the mod.
