Many people do. Many people run HLDS from their home and it takes very little effort to run it on a VPS. Although I don't see what the price of the hardware has anything to do with this. Virtualisation doesn't have to cost anything.

Nothing. As a matter of fact, I never jumped to that conclusion. All I did was point out that it's irrelevant wether he uses a VPS or not.
